Daniel B. Stark, President
Considered to be a pioneer in the field of CTA research, Dan is an original founder of Granite Asset Management and also founder of Daniel B. Stark & Company, one of the managed futures industry’s oldest and most prominent database and research firms. Dan has nearly 30 years of futures experience beginning in 1981 as a local floor trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. There he traded for his own account while studying chart formations, cycles, Fibonacci and Elliot wave principles. In 1987 Dan acquired the rights to the Norwood Index, which began tracking 9 commodity futures funds in October 1978. This index currently tracks the performance of approximately 175 futures funds worldwide and is the oldest continuously published index on managed futures investments.
In 1987 Dan began publishing a monthly newsletter called the Norwood Index Report which became known as the Stark Trader Analysis Report. In this report Dan wrote about specific technical trend analysis observations he makes on 13 different proprietary managed futures indices compiled and charted in this report. Performance on individual funds making up the Stark Fund Index were shown along with composite General Partner statistics for those firms involved in organizing and managing futures funds worldwide.
In 1989 Dan began publishing a quarterly CTA performance report which at the time was the first and only industry publication to include CTA performance charts. This report also included charts on assets under management, net cumulative profits, performance momentum, and linear regression. Entitled the STAR 300 this report focused on the top 300 traders from the 400 plus traders making up the Stark database.
Today the Norwood Index is known as the Stark Fund Index and tracks the performance of approximately 175 futures funds. In addition, Dan maintains 10 proprietary Sector Indices on Commodity Trading Advisors. The Stark Trader Analysis Report and the STAR 300 quarterly report have given way to a robust and extensive CTA database and research application which is used by investors and institutions globally.
For the past 12 years Dan has been working as a consultant to institutions, pool operators, and individual investors in the development, monitoring and fine tuning of various managed futures portfolios.
As a result of his breadth and depth of experience in the managed futures industry, Dan is known and respected by the majority of CTAs both domestically and internationally. |
